This is my piece entitled “Tears”, created in 1930. In Tears, my mannequin’s perfectly placed tears and dramatic gaze mock melodrama and cinematic sadness. The exaggeration of emotion and the unreal perfection of the woman’s tears detach her from humanity. The stretch of reality in this photograph, suggested by the cinematic emotional disconnect, is an idea that connects back to my surrealist artistic roots. Despite the humorous melodrama in the photograph, this work eerily foreshadowed my devastating breakup with Lee Miller, my girlfriend and fellow artist, in 1932.
